Celebrities Back World Santa Challenge

Hollyoaks Alex Fletcher joins Dancing on Ice winner Beth Tweddle, TV presenter Craig Phillips and City Football Legends to boost Liverpool’s bid to reclaim the World Santa Dash title.

Santa Dash 2013

Ambassadors of this year’s Santa Dash – Beth Tweddle, Craig Phillips and Alex Fletcher – took to the streets on a horse-drawn sleigh to warn that it’ll be snow joke if Las Vegas take the crown yet again.

The message was clear – sign up now or yule be sorry if our US rivals don’t end don’t end their winning streak.

The popular event, taking place on Sunday, December 1, will also raise a sack full of cash for charities across the region.

Liverpool last had the title in 2010 and last year the US city beat us by 714 runner despite our own record turn-out of 8,500.

This year, organiser’s are urging the UK to support the city’s effort to hit the 10,000 entries mark for the 10th Santa Dash supporting official event charity Claire House Children’s Hospice. The ultimate goal is to reclaim the world santa dash challenge title from Las Vegas Rivals.

Hollyoaks star Alex Fletcher is taking part in aid of the Liverpool Echo’s Liverpool Unites – the official media charity of the dash – which is fundraising for Alder Hey Hospital.

She said you’d be crackers not to get involved. “It was so close last year and this year we need to beat Las Vegas.

“I took part in the Santa Dash last year with my husband and daughter and it’s such a great day out.

“Liverpool Unites is such a good cause. We’re so lucky to have a fantastic hospital like Alder Hey right on our door step.”

Olympic Bronze Medal winning gymnast Beth Tweddle said: “It really is a great family day – you can bring you dogs and come down with your kids.

“I’ve got lots of children and athletes getting involved in support of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital which is a fantastic cause.

Total gymnastics this year are rallying support through our members and families.”

Liverpool FC legend Alan Kennedy and former Everton player and manager Joe Royle are also encouraging people to sign up.

Former Big Brother winner Craig is taking part in the run to support Claire House Children’s Hospice and Alzheimer’s Society.

Craig said: “Sadly my mum is in the late stages of Alzheimer’s so it’s cause close to my heart.

“I’ve been an ambassador of the Santa Dash for a few years now. For me, the dash starts Christmas off on December 1.

“To see thousands of people all running dressed as Santa and all supporting different charities in the community is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit.”

Race director Alan Rothwell said “Its encouraging that to date we are up on our entries than last year. We are really proud that our ambassadors once again are supporting the world challenge and Im sure with a team effort we’ll reclaim the title thats rightly ours.”

And as well as being a good laugh, the dash provides a great boost to charities.

And it doesn’t matter if you’re not athletic – it’s not a Marathon – you can run or walk and even bring your little Santa Paws.

All Santas will receive a special 10th anniversary commemorative medal on completion of the race.

Standard entry for the Santa Dash costs £20 and there is also a 1K Mini Dash for under 12s straight after the main 5K run, which costs £10 to enter.

Remember you must raise some sponsorship money to benefit charities as this is the entry fee for btrLiverpool to cover the costs of the event.

After you sign up, you can collect your Santa suit from btr’s headquarters in Hatton Garden.

Those running can set up a fundraising page to make it easier to collect the cash.
